Exhibiting is not just about getting work on walls. Exhibiting should build your career, not just be another line on your CV.

Exhibiting requires you to identify and assess suitable opportunities, articulate your work, manage timelines and logistics, communicate professionally and build momentum before and after the exhibition.

The Artist's Exhibition Practice brings the learning, implementation tools and optional individual support together, so you can choose how much help you need.

An Exhibition Practice, Not Just a Course

Strong exhibitions need more than information.

You need to make sound decisions, complete practical work and communicate your art clearly.

  • Understand the complete exhibition process and how each stage connects

  • Choose opportunities that suit your work, goals and positioning

  • Prepare stronger proposals, applications and exhibition material

  • Plan realistic timelines, promotion, installation and logistics

  • Use practical systems that reduce the administrative burden

  • Get experienced input when your own exhibition needs it

Three Options To Choose From

The course is the foundation for all three options.

The Toolkit and Supported options help you put it into practice.

Different artists need or want different levels of help at different times. Some want to learn, some want tools that make implementation easier. Others want an experienced person alongside them while they work through a real opportunity or exhibition. Particularly when stepping into another level of exhibiting.

Whatever you need, there is an option for you.

  • Course: understand what to do and why

  • Toolkit: plan, write and implement

  • Supported: apply the complete system to your own circumstances with individual input

What This Helps You Do

Whichever level you choose, the aim is to help you approach exhibitions as a connected part of your professional practice.

  • Identify exhibition opportunities worth pursuing

  • Develop proposals and applications that communicate your work clearly

  • Make better decisions about venues, formats and presentation

  • Plan preparation, promotion, installation and logistics with less urgency

  • Create professional exhibition writing without getting trapped at a blank page

  • Use each exhibition to strengthen your practice and future opportunities

The difference between the three options is simply how much help you want turning that understanding into action.

The course is the foundation included in all 3 options.

Here is what is included in the course

EXPERIENCE ACROSS MORE THAN ONE EXHIBITION PATHWAY

I am Amanda van Gils, a practising artist, curator and artist business coach.

I have been exhibiting professionally since completing my Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2000. Since then, I have participated in more than 125 exhibitions, including more than 30 solo showings across commercial galleries, public and regional galleries, project spaces, artist-run contexts and international venues.

I did not build that exhibition history by waiting for opportunities to arrive. Some came through invitations, gallery relationships and competitive selections. Others I developed myself, including a touring solo exhibition initiated to build my profile and professional connections after moving to a new state, and curated exhibitions that created opportunities for other artists.

My curatorial projects include Net Work at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, bringing together more than 100 works by 38 contemporary artists; Exchange at Gatakers Artspace, involving 55 artists; and Table 21, developed through The Artists Business Lounge.

I have also supported artists to identify suitable opportunities, strengthen applications and proposals, prepare for exhibitions and create their own pathways into exhibiting.

There is no single exhibition pathway that will serve an artist throughout an entire career.

Different work, ambitions and stages call for different venues, approaches and decisions. The Artist’s Exhibition Practice helps artists understand those options and develop an exhibition practice that can evolve with their work.
